"Hence you may reside in five areas where adharma is rampant -Gambling, Wine, Company of Women, Violence and Gold."

Even as Parikshit said this, Kali dissappeared. He had jumped from where he was standing and lodged himself in a small ball of gold. This gold ball was connected to a ruby. The ruby was connected through exquisite golden artwork to various other precious stones and was adorning ...................

As kali lodged himself in the crown of parikshit. Parikshit searching for Kali made his way forward.

परितः ईक्षते इति परीक्षितः (Continued)

Seeing Kali fall at his feet, parikshit stopped. . .

Kali got up and said " This is kali yuga. It is my dharma that i should be present here to make people understand the value of dharma. It is only through adharma that we understand the value of dharma. It is only through pain and suffering that we understand the value of health. It is only through harsh words that we understand the value of kindness. Hence please provide me places to stay"

To this parikshit replied " You cannot stay here as this place is my kingdom where dharma and righteousness are rampant. You can stay only at places which are bereft of dharma, which influence people to resort to Adharma. Hence you may reside in five areas where adharma is rampant -Gambling, Wine, Company of Women, Violence and Gold."

After this , Kali captured Parikshit................How.................thats another story. Lets see it next friday.

परितः ईक्षते इति परीक्षितः (Continued)

(We are back to the meeting of Parikshit and Kalipurusha)

Parikshit saw that the kalipurusha was holding a dreadful whip in his hand and was thrashing an ox. The poor ox had only one leg and was tottering in pain. Nearby stood a cow. It was pristine white in color with the mark of the swastika on its forehead. It was weeping and the tears which flowed down its cheek traced their path in red. It was as if it was weeping blood and not tears. The cow was weeping for the pain being caused to the ox and in the process was undergoing the pain itself. A small gentle breeze was blowing as though caressing her.

Parikshit, being the bhagavatottama he was immediately understood that this was no ordinary cow. He went upto her with folded hands and asked her who she was. To which she replied that she was Prithvi the mother earth (the adopted daughter of King Prithu who was Parikshit’s ancestor) and the ox was Dharma (or) righteousness.

Seeing Mother Earth and Dharma being tormented by this demon kali, Parikshit flared up, he invoked a divine astra and aimed it at the demon’s head.

The demon too, aimed an arrow at Parikshit.

Both of them adjusted their bows.

                                                                 Strung the arrows.

Pulled them till the very end of their ears

The strain of the bows caused by pulling the string taut caused vibrations which in turned stirred up the dry leaves and dust and sand lying on the ground, which began to rise slowly.

The gentle breeze now increased in velocity and slowly turned into a raging wind blowing around the two warriors as if enclosing/caging them within a natural cage. It was as if only one of them would come out of this ordeal alive.

Because both of them had divine astras which were glowing, the dry leaves fluttering in the wind around them ignited and it presented a devilish sight.

The devas, gandharvas, kinnaras, nagas, purushas, maruts, rudras, rishis, sadhus, munis, swamis gathered in the heavens and watched with bated breath.

Just when everyone thought that this would be a really terrifying battle, the most unexpected of things happened

Kali lunged forward …………………………………………And fell at the feet of Parikshit…………….

What happened next. . .

Lets see next friday

परितः ईक्षते इति परीक्षितः

After a long time, finally I was able to lay hands on the abridged English version of the Srimad Bhagwatham, written beautifully by Smt Kamala Subramaniam

And while reading it I suddenly remembered that I had embarked on an ambitious project of translating the bhagawatam in my own style and had kind of not written for quite some time…

So have decided to post every Friday hereon

Love !!!! (Again)

Here I am again writing about Love. . Being fascinated by our Scriptures from a very young age, I have had a keen interest to read books based on our scriptures. So here I was, reading one of the English versions of the Srimad Bhagawatham written by Smt Kamala Subramaniam. The atmosphere was pretty heavy as I was just back from the 10th day ceremony of my grandmother, and I took up the story of Dhruva – the 6 year old child who got the darshan of the lord of lords, Narayana himself.

As the story goes, he was denied the permission to sit on his father Uttanapada’s laps and his stepmom the Queen Suruchi asked him to pray that he be born in her womb in his next birth if he wanted to enjoy the royal pleasures (sitting on his father’s laps – a royal pleasure!!!)The weeping boy then went to his mother Suniti who told him to pray to Narayana as he is the one to whom bhaktas are dear and he answers all their prayers. Thus driven, the child walks to the forest and is met on the way by Narada, who after testing him initially, initiates him into the sacred mantra – “Om Namo Bhagawathe vasudevaya” and so does Dhruva begin his tapas.

His tapas/penance goes on for 6 months at the end of which Narayana gives him his darshan. At this point, the shlokas have been wonderfully translated by the author – On seeing Narayana, tears well up in the eyes of the child…due to the tough penance he is unable to speak as his cheeks and teeth are stuck together, like a child running to its father, Dhruva stretches both his arms as if wanting to hug the lord himself and starts crying. . .

It was this point which set my thinking, in today’s world, we as children always want our parents to be more . . . more than what they are . . . . . and in the process, we miss out on what they really are...

There’s this Hindi song which goes “Dharti pe roop ma-baap ka, us vidhata ki pehchaan hai” meaning “Parents are the identity of God’s presence on the earth”

The moment we start loving them for what they are, then the divinity truly shows and we all can reach unparalleled heights in our lives, as did Dhruva!!!

Love ! !

For a long time, i have never understood love.....i have seen people talk a lot about love.... how it transcends individuals... how it could be the same - loving your country or loving your beloved...but i have never seen or felt love as a powerful emotion... being brought up in a household where we were not used to say i love you amma / i love you appa......guess that had its own disadvantages......and then the Art of Living happened... i could see how Love had made a difference in the lives of many , many people....including my own. How all the negative emotions and that burdening feeling in your heart vanished the moment you thought about someone you loved.....

Today as i write this blog, through my sisters laptop (in my aunts home in Chennai, where we are all gathered for the ceremonies of my paternal grandmother - our patti who passed away on 24 Sep 2010), i have a much deeper understanding and reverence for LOVE.

Why???? because i feel that the most powerful human emotion of all is LOVE. A love for a son, which makes a mother follow his footsteps into the realm of divinity exactly one day short of one year from his departure..... A love for a daughter- in-law, which makes a mom-in-law a mother, a love for a grandson- aing a love for an entire family spanning almost millions of miles. . . a love for the divine.. .. .. .. .. accepting HIS decision of taking her son away and yet yearning for him day and night. . . . .

Today, as a mother follows the footsteps of her son in the journey to Vaikunta - the realm of the divine, leaving behind scores of weeping kith and kin, i realize one thing - that Love is the most sacred of human emotions. And when Love arises, nothing can stand the aura of it.

Let us pray that mother and son attain the realm of the divine peacefully !!!

Samashrayanam & Panchasamskaram

SamAshrayanam means 'to approach (AchAryA) with all sincerity'.In a nut  shell , during 'SamAshrayanam' ,the AchAryA initiates a person , irrespective of caste, creed or sex, as his sishyA. It is a commitment from the disciple that he or she will live as per the wishes of the AchAryA. Thus the person gets the  link to the Sri Vaishnava paramparA. During SamAshrayanam , Pancha SamskAram (five Purifications) is performed and he becomes a "Sri VaishnavA".

The five samskArams and its main purposes are

    1. thApam   : To emboss the impressions of heated Sankha and ChakrA on the arms ( near the shoulders ).

    2. pundram  : To wear the dvAdasa OOrdhva pundram ( 12 Thiruman & Srichoornam )

    3. nAmam    : To be christened by the AchAryA afresh as "RAmAnuja dAsan" (addition of 'dAsA' at the end of  ones name) to indicate that one is forever a servant of the Supreme Lord Sriman NArAyanA and BhagavAn RAmAnujA .

    4. manthram : To get the initiation of "Rahasya Traya MantrAs" - AshtAksharam , Dvayam and charama slokam  .

    5. Ijyai    : To learn the worship of Sriman nArAyanA in proper form ( Bhagavad ThiruvArAdhanam) .

Today,
by the blessings of our Lord Sri Lakshmi Narayana Perumal ,
by the blessings of our Sri Vaishnavite Acharya - H H Sri Ranga Ramanuja Maha Desikan (Srimad Srimushnam Andavan),
by the blessings of our Guru HH Sri Sri Ravishankar,
by the blessings of my father Late Sri D Srinivasan, grandfather Late Sri R Devanathan and of all the members of this illustrious family  - I have completed my Samashrayanam and panchasamskaram .... Feels Gr8....

Adiyen Bharadwaja ( Btw having the conch and chakra (panchajanya and Sudarsana ) embossed on my shoulders also feels cool. will post pics sometime

Ganesh Chathurthi

Come Saturday-11 Sep 2010 and it is Ganesha Chaturthi !

Lets hear something interesting on Ganesha which Guruji has talked about :

Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated on the day on which Lord Ganesha is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees. Ganesha, the elephant-headed son of Shiva and Parvati, is worshipped as the supreme god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Though it is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the symbolism behind the festival is much deeper.

The essence of Ganeshji is brought out beautifully by Adi Shankara. Though Ganeshji is worshiped as the elephant-headed God, the form (swaroop) is just to bring out its parabrahma roopa. Ganeshji is described as Ajam Nirvikalpam Niraakaaramekam. This means that Ganeshji is never born.He is Ajam (unborn), he is Niraakaar (formless) and he is Nirvikalpa (attributeless). Ganeshji symbolises the consciousness which is omnipresent. Ganeshji is the same energy which is the reason for this universe, from which everything is manifested and it’s the same energy in which the whole world will be dissolved. Ganeshji is not somewhere outside of us, but the very centre of our life. But this is very subtle knowledge. Not everybody can perceive the formless without the form. Our ancient Rishis and Munis knew this; so they created the form for the benefit and understanding of people at all levels.

Those who can’t experience the formless, over a period of sustained experience of manifested form reach the formless Brahman.
So in reality, Ganeshji is formless; yet there is a form to which Adi Shankara prayed and that form carries the message of the formlessness of Ganeshji. Thus, the form serves as the starting point and gradually the formless consciousness begins to manifest.

Ganesh Chaturthi marks a unique art of reaching formless Paramatma called Lord Ganesh by repeated worship of the manifest form of Ganesha.

Even the Ganesh Stotram, the prayers recited in the praise of Ganeshji, conveys the same. We pray to Ganeshji in our consciousness to come out and sit in the idol for us for a while so that we can play with him. And after the puja, we again pray asking him to go back to where he comes from; that’s our consciousness. While he is in the idol, we offer back whatever God has given us through the puja of the idol.

The ritual of immersing (visarjan) the idols after few days of worship reinforces the understanding that God is not in the idol, it’s inside us. So experiencing the omnipresent in the form and deriving joy out of the form is the essence of the Ganesha Chaturthi festival. In a way such organized festivity and worships lead to an upsurge in enthusiasm and devotion.

Ganeshji is the lord of all the good qualities in us. So when we worship him, all the good qualities will blossom in us. He is also the lord of knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge dawns only when we become aware of the Self. When there is inertia, there is no knowledge, no wisdom, nor is there any liveliness (Chaitanya) or progress in life. So the consciousness has to be awakened and the presiding deity of consciousness is Ganeshji. That’s why before every puja, the Lord Ganesha is worshiped to awaken the consciousness.

Therefore, install the idol, worship it with infinite love, meditate and experience Lord Ganesha from within. This is the symbolic essence of Ganesh Chaturti festival, to awaken the Ganesha tatva which is masked inside us.

and btw, I will be in Chennai starting 10th till 14th so look forward to seeing a lot of ganeshas and will post on that soon.

Feel Like quitting !!!!! (Read on) - Never QUIT

Do Not Quit

One day I decided to quit...

I quit my job, my relationship, my spirituality... I wanted to quit my life.

I went to the woods to have one last talk with God.

"God," I said. "Can you give me one good reason not to quit?"

His answer surprised me...

"Look around," He said. "Do you see the fern and the bamboo?"

"Yes," I replied.

"When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took a very good care of them. I gave them light. I gave them water.

The fern quickly grew from the earth. Its brilliant green covered the floor. Yet nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo.

In the second year, the fern grew more vibrant and plentiful. And again, nothing came from the bamboo seed. But I did not quit on the bamboo," He said.

"In the third year, there was still nothing from the bamboo seed. But I would not quit. In the fourth year, again, there was nothing from the bamboo seed. I would not quit," He said

"Then in the fifth year a tiny sprout emerged from the earth. Compared to the fern it was seemingly small and insignificant... But just 6 months later the bamboo rose to over 100 feet tall.

It had spent the five years growing roots.

Those roots made it strong and gave it what it needed to survive. I would not give any of my creations a challenge it could not handle."

He said to me. "Did you know, my child, that all this time you have been struggling, you have actually been growing roots?"

"I would not quit on the bamboo. Neither will I ever quit on you."

"Don't compare yourself to others," He said. "The bamboo had a different purpose than the fern. Yet, they both make the forest beautiful."

"Your time will come," God said to me. " You will rise high! "

"How high should I rise?" I asked.

"How high will the bamboo rise?" He asked in return.

"As high as it can?" I questioned.

"Yes," He said. "Give me glory by rising as high as you can."

I left the forest and bring back this story. I hope these words can help you see that God will never give up on you. He will never give up on you.

Never regret a day in your life.ood days give you happiness

Bad days give you experiences
Both are essential to life.

Keep going...

Happiness keeps you Sweet,
Trials keep you Strong,
Sorrows keep you Human,
Failures keep you humble,
Success keeps You Glowing,
But Only God keeps You Going!

RAAVAN

In today’s world everywhere people know of ravan(a), they take his name with contempt. True, his act of abducting sita was horrendous and led to his meeting his end at the hands of rama.

But in doing so, we forget that he was such a great person that Mahavishnu had to himself come and undergo all the tribulations of a human life and end his reign.

There is a situation in the Ramayana where in Ravan(a) compares himself and rama

na raamastapasaa devi na balena vikramaiH

na dhanena mayaa tulyastejasaa yashasaapi vaa

Now Rama is Mahavishnu, the supreme personality of godhead ; to be compared to Rama means a great achievement in itself. And all our scriptures teach us to see the good in even our enemies, else Valmiki would not have written such verses about ravana !

Now, coming to the film – though a lot has been said about the acting prowess of every1 save Abhishek (one of my friends felt vikram in ravanan was better) , I still feel Abhishek has come a long way from his Refugee & Drona days.

A highly mature performance from Abhishek, it was a class team act (Abhi, ash, vikram and also govinda and abhi’s brother).

When you make a film that is even loosely based on mythology, it is very important that the casting is done keeping in mind the characters of the original story, and save the huge gigantic figure, the voice that could crack trees, I believe Beera has lived up to his reputation of Ravan !!!

Kudos to Maniratnam, the photographer, Abhishek for a wonderful effort !

(Well, I still have not seen the tamil version, so will see it and comment!)

Guru Purnima

This is an extract from Deccan Herald

Celebrating devotion

Gurupurnima is called the day of the Master, but it is actually the day of the devotee.

There are three types of people who come to the Master - the student, the disciple and the devotee. A student goes to a teacher and learns something, gets some information and walks out of the school. The student is the one, who collects information, but the information is not knowledge, it is not wisdom.

Then, there is the disciple; the disciple follows the example of the Master. But a disciple is with the Master for the sake of learning wisdom, for the sake of improving his life, for attaining enlightenment. He is trying to bring a transformation in his life.

And then there is a devotee. A devotee is not there even for wisdom. He is simply rejoicing in love. He has fallen in deep love with the Master, with Infinity, with God. Students are in abundance, disciples are a few, but the devotees are rare.

One of Buddha’s disciples named Sariputra achieved enlightenment. Soon thereafter, Buddha told him, “Now you go ahead, go into the world and preach, teach, and do the same work I do. Carry on my work.” As instructed, Sariputra left Buddha, but he was crying. People asked him, “Why are you crying when you are enlightened?” He replied, “Who cares about this enlightenment? It could have waited. I would have waited. I didn’t even bother about it or ask for it because the joy of being at the feet of Buddha was so great. Being a devotee was so great. I cry now because I miss it. I would have preferred that to this enlightenment.” He said.

Who is a Guru? A Guru is just like a window. Guru simply means one who brings more joy, more alertness, and more awareness into your life. A Guru is not one who holds any authority over you. A Guru is not one who dictates terms to you. Rather, a Guru encourages you to be in touch with yourself. A Guru reminds you to live in the present moment, and a Guru takes away the guilt, agitation, sorrow, and anguish, which allows you to be yourself. That in the true sense is the meaning of Guru. A Guru does not simply fill you with knowledge, but he kindles the life force in you. In the presence of the Guru, you become more alive. The Guru invokes not only intelligence but also the intellect in you. Knowledge may not invoke intelligence, but in a state of intelligence, knowledge is inherent.

In the Upanishads, five signs of sadguru are mentioned. In the presence of a sadguru knowledge flourishes (Gyana raksha), sorrow diminishes (dukha kshaya), joy wells up without any reason (sukha aavirbhava), abundance dawns (samriddhi) and all talent manifest (sarva samvardhan).

Once you have found a sadguru, remember that he or she is always there with you, watching and giving you wisdom. Spiritual path is not only a path of learning more; it is also a path of unlearning. Learning has no end; unlearning has an end. The true path is one that takes you home and kindles that deep love in you.

Love is not just an act. It is our very nature. It is what we are made up of. Love is something that even the Divine rejoices in. The infinity longs for you as much as you long for it. It is waiting to receive you. It is as anxious as you are to be near. So when a devotee flowers in this planet, infinity is very happy.

Understand that you are the #1 devotee, and feel grateful for the great knowledge you have received from your Master. Turn back and see how they changed and developed in the last one year. Assess what you have learnt and how have you grown in knowledge. This Guru Purnima rise in devotion.

Jai Shri Ram!

The Sangeetha Upanyasam (my first in Hosur, 3rd overall) on “SUNDARA KAANDAM” at the Muneeshwar nagar Vijaya Vinayagar Sathsangam was a huge success.

There were so many old and knowledgeable people who were well versed in the scriptures and a couple of them were vidwans and vidushis themselves.

A topic like Sundarakaandam is usually reserved for such an audience. More importantly, this also elevates the expectations on the speaker. This being the first concert in Hosur, more so the first without the physical presence of my father, I was shaking the moment I got on stage. But surprisingly, I felt reassured and the same feeling of contentment (characteristic of those times I spent with dad) arose in me…. I would quote one of my friends “Physically he was not there, yet I could feel his permanent presence”

There were so many people who enjoyed the concert, who applauded the effort, who asked for more such programmes, but this post would not end if I do not thank the three people who made this possible

1. Ramanathan @ RAM: I could not have asked for a better gift from existence. I met this man 3 years ago in a satsang at home. We felt we had always been there for each other for lifetimes .An amazing singer, his very presence on the stage next to me was so uplifting that I simply cannot describe it.

2. Srinivasamurthy: A very senior violin vidwan, I am really grateful to. While telling a story, the most important aspect is to feel the sannidhyam (the event) in any particular situation. Only then will the story teller really get into the groove. This was effortlessly created by the violinist.

3. Venkata @ Venkatasubramanian : A firecracker of a mridangist (both of us learned from the same guru. He is fortunate to still be with our sir, Sri Srimushnam Raja Rao). His presence was really inspiring and he seamlessly aided us to lift the concert to a higher level with each song! I am always grateful to him to have accepted to come and also to have brought the violinist along

The best part is we have been requested to do a 2/3 day Sangeetha Upanyasam on “Krishna Leela” . More details soon! Keep in touch and God Bless!!!

" only a pure celibate bramhachari touch will give life to this child''

Thus thundered the heavens. Immediately the pandavas and their kith and kin started searching for rishis, swamis and others who could accomplish this task,.

As they were engrossed in this, Krishna came up to partha and asked “ Mind if I give a shot ???
At this, an enraged bheemaa started shouting at Krishna “ did you not hear what the heavens said ???? a bramhachari and that too a celibate one at that???? You are always surrounded by girls??? How dare you think of giving a shot????do you want to put the baby’s life in danger ??
At this Krishna said “ Look. Anyways nobody is coming forward to save the baby. What harm is there in letting me try….

After a lot of persuasion, Krishna went near the baby and touched the baby’s head with his toe . . .and behold ! the baby started crying !!!!

Why and how do you think this happened…..keep thinking…..till the next post

As ashwatthama released the narayanastra..... he knew where it had to strike . . . the womb of the youngest mother to be and the most delicate uttara, the widow of abhimanyu

knowing this , all the pandavas rushed to the one man, the only person who could stop this, the coll suave blue clad yadava king - vasudeva krsna , none but narayana himself !

krsna himself in his divine form went into the womb of uttara and saved the foetus.....and in the process, the child got to see the divine form of narayana  - "shanka chakra gadha paane dwaraka nilayachyutha....govinda pundareekaksha raksha maam sharanagatam"

However as fate would have it, despite krsna saving the child, it was still born......and then the heavens thundered " only a pure celibate bramhachari's touch will give life to this child''

Gurupuja Phase II - Bliss...Belief and beyond

"Every Sishya has a Guru. But a Guru has no Sishya (Pupil). For the guru all of his students are on and the same. hence do not make the Guru a part of your universe. Understand that the Guru is Shaashwat (Permanent); he has been with you before , is with you and will be with you forever."
                                                                                                             -Sri Sri ...
Well the above quote exactly unfolded itself in a practical way in my life. I had got my invite for my Gurupuja Phase II during Feb 2010. A 3 day course and I went with a lot of stuff in my heart - A lot of questions about my father's loss and why gurudev did not do anything about it ? ;  a heavy heart with practically NO SADHANA for the last 5 months......

Gurupuja Phase II Started  - 4.2.2010 and I saw that by the time i reached VM for any session, it was already full and we had no space but the last row....This happened again and again.....The first day I managed to squeeze in the first row but could not continue for long....and then resigned to my fate I went and sat on the last row from the next session onwards. Pretty contradictory to the fact that during my phase I , I was one of those guys who were right there in front under Bhanuma's nose for all the 7 days ; she recognised me and all that but this time, i could not even see her proerly ,and only could hear her. Still I went about through with all the sessions giving my 10%, i would be there first for the sadhana and impose all those yogasanas and padmasadhana on me with a lot more ferocity, after all i wanted to come out of this state of heaviness and helplessness and was doing my best to come out of it...,.But it would not go.. Throughout the sessions and through the Gurupuja i would be awesome and once i came out... back to square one....

Day two - 5.2.2010 - Day 2 Started again with yoga, seva and in our first session, Bhanu amma said - Guruji is coming to meet us all... I said wow! in phase I he spent a full 2 hours with us and I felt this time he'll meet me, i will ask him whatever i want to and i will be fine.....He came, spoke to us, blessed a few new sahaj teachers and vanished. All in a space of 12 minutes.

I was feeling miserable...But the same time i realised, i was feeling .........light.....THe Gurupuja was working something on me. (In the first two days alone we did the gurupuja around 5 times.......

After satsang  I met an international teacher , Sandhya Rao (We call her Sandhya-MA) and the whole night we (Sandhya MA - Anupam (a YLTP Teacher from UP) , and 2 other kids spent talking and laughing right upto 2 AM) (For all those who do not know sandhya-ma, it is a blessing to be with her. In case you find that you are with her on the same course by chance, and you are feeling down stick around with her, you will see the healing power of grace.)

By the time I went to bed i realised i was feeling lighter.....

Day three - 6.2.2010 - Day starts with i waking up at 4 am... 2 hours of sleep.... splitting headache.... i run all the way to the VM.... i can feel the headache dissolving and an immense amount of strength in my body..... after the yoga... session to start and i am in the last row again, this time a much better anil..... but still with the feeling that HE has not met me in person..... Just behind me is the window . Outside is the parikrama of the VM and suddenly everyone rushes to the windows saying HE is coming... I  get up, walk slowly towards the window.....feeling that anyways HE would not see me....i am the only one at that window ...and in front of my eyes is tha last quadrant of the parikrama with the steps on the right and sure enough there he comes... i keep looking at him as he crosses each window to the left of me.. and ...and the moment he comes in my panoram, he looks at me !!!!!!!!!........he is walking on the last urve....but his eyes are riveted to me........at the steps, for a split second he stops (Still looking at me....closes his eyes partially as if giving a message - Yeah ... you have been through tough times dear ...i know that  - flashes a big smile at me and goes off.......and with that PANORAMA OF DIVINITY.....the last of that already depleting depression in  me just dissolved away and I felt whole......

Later in the public darshan, i met him and spoke to him, but thats another post on another sunday
